There was a panel at Eurogamer consisting of different practitioners in the industry talking about getting a job in video games from which I made notes.
No experience is a bad experience. You can always learn something from the most tedious task.
You should always keep trying to learn and expanding both your craft and your knowledge of the industry.
Don't expect to get a job instantly and don't expect your first job to be great. If you are having trouble finding work, look for internships or work experience as you should always continue to develop your portfolio.
There are more roles in the industry than you know. Research and don't burn any bridges.
Depending on the way you work, you should either specialise or diversify. Whether or not you want to reach as many people as possible or develop a niche and really hone it.
You can always work for yourself but remember that you need to know your audience.
A degree isn't enough to get you a job. You need a decent portfolio as well as various other side projects.
Don't be scared of being creative when you send in your portfolio. An example being that someone sent a game, burnt to a CD with a nice cover on it, to Ubisoft.
